Over
the years, I've met plenty of conference organizers, training coordinators, retreat
leaders, and others. I've watched them work, and you know what? It's a tough job!
If you've ever been involved in planning a conference or some other big learning
event or gathering, you know exactly what I mean. It takes thorough planning, hard
work, and a juggler's skill at managing details.
That's why I make things as easy as possible for the planners, whether I'm speaking
at a big conference, a brief lunch-and-learn, or something in-between. If you're
thinking of hiring me for a talk or workshop, count on the following:
- I don't use a speakers' bureau, a rep, or any other kind of intermediate agent.
So when you want to talk with me, you'll talk with me -- and not with a third party
who's acting as my go-between. (My direct number is 614-571-9529.) This speeds up
the communication process, makes things more personal, and gives you first-hand information.
- If you're working with colleagues and want to decide on a speaker together, I'll
be more than happy to schedule a conference call with everyone. (If we're fairly
close by, I'll skip the phone and visit with all of you in person.) I love these
conversations -- they give people a chance to learn more about my content, approach,
and personality. And I get a chance to learn what they have in mind for the session.
- Regardless of how many people are involved in hiring a speaker, I always take
a collaborative approach. We might need to have a couple of substantial conversations
to determine the best talk topic and shape it for a given audience.
- I keep the paper-shuffling to a minimum. If you decide to hire me for a session,
I'll send a simple agreement for your signature. This is typically sent via e-mail,
in PDF format -- to save paper and eliminate delivery time.
- When sending the agreement, I'll also send a complete description of the session(s)
for use in promotional materials, a bio, a high-resolution photo, and ideas for promoting
the session. I'll include several of my articles for reprinting in newsletters or
elsewhere -- as a way to stir interest in the session. All of these items will be
sent electronically for easy cutting and pasting. And you'll get them way ahead of
the session date.
- Unlike most speakers, I don't bother with partial prepayment or a so-called "hold"
fee in advance of the session. A single invoice is sent afterward. There's no sense
complicating things or adding administrative time with two invoices.
- As for travel expenses, we make all arrangements on the Web for the very best
rates. The expenses are billed at direct cost and included on the single invoice
along with the session fee.
