EVERYDAY LEADERSHIP: IDEAS,
TOOLS & YOU
This is NOT your traditional training
session. Designed for supervisors, it's more like a learning roundtable where people
come together to share their ideas, experiences, and perspectives -- along with their
challenges, questions, and concerns.
The session is led by Tom Terez,
in a forum numbering up to 15 people. Tom brings questions to stir the dialogue along
with a facilitative approach to ensure that everyone contributes and learns. He also
brings plenty of ideas and tools based on his 20 years working with organizations
throughout the country.
This is a practical session all
about what works in the real world, brought to life with workplace examples, revealing
stories, best practices, and Tom's trademark good humor.
- What keeps people motivated
and engaged at work? We take a look, focusing on specific actions that supervisors
can implement right away.
- What are your strengths, and
what keeps you motivated during the workday? During the session, each person
gets the chance to find out. This is important because we need to do a good job of
leading ourselves before we can effectively lead others.
- Is there a better way to communicate?
Absolutely. We look at ways to talk so that people listen -- and ways to listen
so that people talk.
- Are there common pitfalls when
it comes to leading people? You bet. We look at long-held beliefs that do more
harm than good, and we reorient our thinking around a handful of practices that work
best.
- What can I do about a chronically
negative employee? Not much, to be honest. Your time is better spent trying to
engage the people who seem to be in neutral -- who go about their tasks without using
their hearts or minds. We look at the best course of action.
- What happens after the
session? Each person leaves with his or her own manageable plan of action. The
aim is NOT to come up with a long to-do list -- but to identify two or three commitments
that can make a significant difference.
Most supervisors limit their own
potential. They define their role in a narrow way when they could and should be viewing
themselves as leaders. These challenging times call for leadership that goes far
beyond the traditional supervisory role.
